Mal Hart sailing his newly launched ‘Betty’ takes Line Honours title in the TLC Healthcare CBA Nationals hosted by Sorrento Sailing and Couta Boat Club with over forty starters.
Close racing between Nick Williams ‘Wagtail’, David Beck’s ‘Jocelyn’ and Harry Mighell’s ‘Margarita’ saw all boats leading races and three different winners of the four races completed.
But it was Hart’s one week old ‘Betty’ that got the better with two heat wins that saw them narrow winners ahead of Wagtail, Jocelyn and Margarita.
‘Betty’ named in deference to the late Andrew Plympton showed good early form, Hart said “she’s a ripper” and thanked his crew for an outstanding effort in getting her to the start line.
On handicap, sister ship ‘Bella Blue’ sailed by Bernie O’Hanlon got the chocolates with ‘Rip’ Will Phillips second and Ken Vaughan’s ‘Sorrento’ 3rd.
In division two Sunday Gibson sailing ‘Jessamine’ took out the line honours championship, with ‘Joan’ sailed by Tony Kinsman first on handicap.
The next Couta Boat Nationals will be sailed in Sydney in October, to follow these magnificent boats head to www.coutaboat.com.au.
Next week will see a fleet of 60 plus Couta Boats competing for the pinnacle event of the season, The Portsea Cup, sailed directly in front of the Portsea Pier and the Portsea Hotel, making for a great spectacle.
Hart say’s “on Jocelyn we won the Portsea Cup four or five times and my crew will leave nothing in the tank to have ‘Betty’ engraved on the trophy this year”.
