James “Hot Rod” Lane's Pacific island dream for the notorious “Flyin' Hawaiian” catamaran he built in Marin ended somewhere off Monterey.
The Coast Guard rescued five people from the sinking 65-foot catamaran built amid controversy in San Rafael, hoisting them aloft after the 8-ton vessel began sinking 120 miles off the coast early Saturday.
Coast Guard Petty Officer 3rd Class Adam Stanton said that after marine authorities received a distress call about 8 a.m., a C-17 transport “confirmed that the sailing vessel Flyin' Hawaiian was taking on water.” With a nearby tanker standing by to block high seas and wind, five people were plucked from the sinking craft in a dramatic rescue by two helicopter crews. They were taken ashore without injury.
