The final leg of the WA Sabre State Championships was held at Perth Dinghy Sailing Club on 21st March. 4 races were sailed in medium to strong winds throughout the day.
It was a hard fought series for the Sabre Sailing WA State Championships held over 12 races with four discards to be sailed across three days starting at the Cruising Yacht Club back in November 2014, Nedlands Yacht Club in December and finishing up at Perth Dinghy in March 2015, this provided a wide variety of wind & water conditions to cater for all sailors.
35 Sabres entered they had some great racing. The final championship places came down to the last leg of races, with Steve Walters winning the three races in the fresh conditions. Steve Walters who purchased the previous State and 2013/14 National Champion Scott Olsen’s boat A Salt Weapon carried on the tradition to snatch the championship from 2nd place Ashley Hood Sainthood. Ashley sailed consistently to finish 2nd. 3rd place went to Pete Coop in On Fire. Ray Martin took out the first wooden boat position trophy and Trevor Holm from Walpole Yacht Club won the President’s Award.
The championships were kindly sponsored by Boating Hardware who have supported this event and Sabre Sailing in Western Australia for many years.
The three Yacht Clubs involved provided fantastic support and race management, so thank you to these clubs and all involved. Congratulations to all winners and a big thank you to all the sailors that competed in the event. Review and planning is now underway for the next year’s championships.
