Man dies after yacht reported missing in Broken Bay

A man’s body has been recovered on the state’s Central Coast after his yacht was reported missing in Broken Bay at the weekend.

About 6.30am on Sunday (19 April 2015), the Marine Area Command were contacted after concerns were raised for the welfare of a 57-year-old St Leonards man believed to be on board a yacht in Broken Bay. On Monday (20 April 2015) and yesterday (Tuesday 21 April 2015), Water Police and NSW Marine Rescue conducted extensive searches of the Broken Bay, Cowan Creek and lower Hawkesbury River areas, including marina and yacht clubs, but the vessel was not found.

Shortly before 7am today (Wednesday 22 April 2015), a member of the public contacted emergency services after a man’s body was discovered on Forresters Beach. Officers from Brisbane Water Local Area Command established a crime scene at the location and forensic specialists attended. The man has now been formerly identified as the missing 57-year-old man.

Police have launched an investigation to establish the exact circumstances surrounding the incident and a post mortem examination will be conducted to determine the cause of death.

Inquiries are continuing regarding the recovery of the vessel, a 12m Hanse Yacht, and if any debris is sighted by members of the public they’re advised to contact the Marine Area Command via Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

A report will also be prepared for the information of the Coroner.
