Passengers safe after Tall Ship Silva loses power in Halifax Harbour

The Tall Ship Silva was towed to the Halifax waterfront after it lost power near York Redoubt on Wednesday afternoon.

Fifty-one people were on board when the ship lost power and began to drift toward shore. Crew called for assistance at about 3:30 p.m., said Capt. Peter Ryan of the Joint Rescue Co-ordination Centre.

A Canadian Coast Guard rescue craft, two other coast guard vessels and a Cormorant helicopter were initially dispatched, but only one coast guard vessel was on scene after a tug arrived.

Jeff Farwell, the president of Murphy’s, which operates the Silva, said air in the fuel lines was to blame for the hiccup.
