RQYS opening day to celebrate 125 years

Celebrating 125 years of sailing in Brisbane, the Royal Queensland Yacht Squadron will open for the 2009/10 Sailing Season on Saturday 5th September .

With a rich history in sailing achievements, the Squadron boasts Olympic representation since 1956, numerous major event winners, national and world champions as well as starting major yacht races locally.

The 125th year of sailing promises to be one of the strongest and most successful, hosting Sail Brisbane and the upcoming Contender world championships.

Steeped in traditions, a regular highlight for the Squadron continues with the Blessing of the Fleet and the opening of the season performed by Commander Roger Priest RANR.

Celebrations continue when Manly Boat Harbour spectacularly comes alive with a flotilla of yachts, powerboats and dinghies. The Fleet Sailpast for Salute under full dress ships will be taken by Commander Priest and the 50th Commodore of RQYS, Russell McCart.

Afternoon sailing on the southern and northern courses for both division yachts and sailing competition classes will begin for the season. Excellent viewing opportunities will exist around Manly Village and along the Esplanade, and best viewing of boats and the sail past will be from Norfolk Point.
