Design Brief – Swan 90

DESIGN BRIEF: SWAN 90

Luxury Finnish builder Nautor's Swan will launch a new 90-footer later this year.

Nautor's Swan began work on the Swan 90 in October 2005 at its new yard in Pietarsaari, Finland. The model is due for completion in June 2007.

The Swan 90 will be the latest in a long line of racing yachts designed by Nautor's Swan's designer, German Frers. In the Swan 90, Frers has combined an elegant and sophisticated cruiser in Nautor's Swan inimitable style with his extensive experience of building high-tech racing yachts.

Measuring 27.71 metres overall, with a light displacement of 53.250kg, the Swan 90 will combine quality cruising capabilities and an outstanding interior with the distinctive quality of a Nautor's Swan. Below deck, the Swan 90FD boasts accommodation for a large crew which is both stylish and comfortable.

With its elegant proportions and refined lines, the Swan 90 is set to become a benchmark of the builder's range. Designed to be easy to handle, even with a limited crew, it is intended to woo competitive racers. With hydraulic winches, a hydraulic headsail furling sail and handling controlled via push buttons, the yacht can easily be managed by a short-handed crew in cruising mode. But for competitive racing, it can be crewed by a team of 20.

With extended cruising in mind, accommodation comprises an owner's cabin with double accommodation, three guest cabins that sleep two, and two crew cabins, both containing a bunk bed. Each cabin has its own bathroom with a separate shower, apart from the crew area, which shares a bathroom. Outside of the main sleeping areas, there is a luxurious main saloon and galley as well as a spacious navigation system.

Build options
The Swan 90 is available in two versions: the Swan 90 FD and the Swan 90 S.
Construction on the Swan 90 FD began in the Nautor's Swan moulding shop in Kallby, with the moulding of the hull. The boat is available with both a full carbon fibre hull and deck construction or with a glass and aramid hybrid fibres hull. Installations on the hull began with the production team focusing on the assembly of the yacht to include the frame works for the floorboards and engine room. Other preparations involved installing the engine, plumbing and steering system. Production of the yacht is well under way; the deck was installed mid-January and has been created from infusion-moulded carbon fibre Epoxy laminate. It consists of a forward cockpit, providing social space, and the main entrance to the saloon area is located here. A bridge deck links the forward cockpit to the steering cockpit, which provides access to the crew area and navigation station. The Swan 90 has already made its mark with more than five models already sold, with no owners requesting any modifications.
