Entries for the 2010 OAMPS Insurance Brokers Australian Youth Championship close on Friday November 27 with competitors urged to get their entry in early to avoid a late fee.
The 2010 OAMPS Insurance Brokers Australian Youth Championship will be held at Largs Bay Sailing Club, South Australia, from the 6th to 10th of January 2010, with competition being held in the 420, 29er, Hobie 16, Laser 4.7, Laser Radial and Techno 293 classes.
In a major addition to the already popular regatta the event will welcome youth sailors from across Oceania as they battle for positions at the inaugural Youth Olympic Games. The event will also be the Techno 293 Oceania Championships.
The 2010 Youth Olympic Games will be held in Singapore from the 14th to 26th of August 2010, with sailors competing in four classes, boys and girls windsurfer, both on a Bic Techno 293, and a boys and girls one person dinghy, both in a Byte CII.
Yachting Australia CEO Phil Jones says that the Youth Olympic Games will provide young sailors a great opportunity to take part in a major sporting event.
“We're very happy that the 2010 OAMPS Insurance Brokers Australian Youth Championship has been chosen to host the Oceanic qualifications for the 2010 Youth Olympic Games,” said Jones. “This decision is set to provide Australia's youth sailors with some strong competition from around the region at the largest domestic youth sailing event of the year.”
“Those sailors that are selected to represent Australia at the 2010 Youth Olympic Games will have an amazing opportunity to experience sport at the highest level at such a young age,” he said.
To be eligible for selection athletes must be born between 1 January 1994 and 31 December 1995.
There are three components to the Youth Olympic Games Nomination and Selection Process, the first being qualifying the National Olympic Committee, in this case the Australian Olympic Committee (AOC), for a place or places at the Youth Olympic Games, followed by gaining nomination by Yachting Australia to the AOC and the third is selection by the AOC for the Youth Olympic Games.
For the 2010 Youth Olympic Games the Oceania region comprises Australia, New Zealand, American Samoa, Cook Island, FSo Micronesia, Fiji, Guam, Papua New Guinea, Samoa, Tahiti, Solomon Islands and Vanuatu with the qualifications taking part in the following events, boys and girls windsurfer aboard the Bic Techno 293 and boys and girls one person dinghy in the Laser 4.7.
