Great conditions allow close racing at Sail Brisbane

Day two of the 2009 Sail Brisbane took place in ideal sailing conditions resulting in some great racing with a number of class leaders consolidating their leads while there was also plenty of movements throughout the fleets.

Brendan Casey continues to lead the Finn class and sits on six points after two wins and a second today, with the UK's Henry Bagnall following closely behind on nine points and Rob McMillan is third.

“It was a good day of racing out there today,” said Casey. “We've got seven Finns at Sail Brisbane and after we shortened the course for today's races it bunched everybody up and increased the competition.”

“The Finn class is undergoing a resurgence in Australia with a number of new sailors while others are coming back, making the future bright for the class,” he said.

The Laser fleet has an international flavour at the front with Chile's Martias Del Solar Go leading from the UK's Robert Godwin in second.

The Australian Sailing Team's Tom Slingsby is third after a first and second, but has had to leave the regatta early after two good days of racing.

Ben Franklin is at the front of the Laser Radial fleet, just two points ahead of Mitchell Kennedy with Ireland's Annalise Murphy in third. Murphy also leads the Women's class, four points clear of Australian Sailing Development Squad sailor Laura Baldwin. In the Laser 4.7 class Daniel Smith has a slender two point lead over Josh Franklin with the two fighting out every race.

In the 470 class brothers Alexander and Patrick Conway continued their strong run from day one with two seconds and a third, though the story of the day was late arrivers Sam Kivell and Will Ryan. The pair won all three races to jump up the leader board to be third overall, just six points behind the Conways.

Local sailors Sasha and Jaime Ryan lead the International 420s, three points clear of Lucy Shephard and Amelia Catt with Genevieve Warlow and Georgie Toner third.

Adam Lahey and Troy Rushton had two wins and a second in the 29er class and lead from Angus Rankin and Grant Hudson while in the Foiling Moths Brent Pearson is first, Benjamin Rankine second and Justin Spillman third.

Luke Baille continues to be unstoppable in the RS:X class with five wins from five starts and in the Optimists Hugh Cronin has an 11 point lead over Charlie Wyatt while Joel Turner has a 100 per cent record in the Sabot class, with Sophie Lahey second.
