ISAF launches national sail training manager program

The International Sailing Federation (ISAF) has launched the Sport Specific Training in Sailing Course to develop qualified training programme managers around the world.

This Sport Specific Training in Sailing Course will be funded by the IOC Olympic Solidarity Coaches Programme. The eight-week Scholarship will train and develop potential National Sail Training Programme Managers as part of the ongoing ISAF initiatives continues to develop youth sailing and participation in grass roots training worldwide.

The course will be run at the Sport Specific Training Centre, Rockley International in Great Britain. Any ISAF Member National Authority (MNA) who has identified a suitable candidate should first contact ISAF Training and Development Manager Dan Jaspers, who will be able to give the specific guidance required to move onto the next step. Each National Olympic Committee can apply for one of these Scholarship Courses per year across all sports. This means there is much competition from other International Sport Federations that run similar programmes.

The successful candidates will complete the course with International Standard Qualifications and experience in the following disciplines:

Dinghy Sailing Instructor
Senior Instructor
Advanced Instructor Endorsement for dinghies
Racing Instructor
Multihull InstructorTraining
Windsurfing
First Aid
Powerboat skills and Instructional Certificates
VHF Radio Qualification
Basic Sea Safety and Navigation
Knowledge of how to set up and run a sailing Club / Centre
Knowledge of Club Inspection procedures
Marine Coastguard visit
Gold medal Olympic sailor mentoring sessions
2012 Olympic venue tours and sailing experiences

Dan Jaspers, ISAF Training and Development Manager, said: “This is the first Scholarship of its kind for any International Federation. ISAF has recognizing that it has a responsibility to populate the base of its participation pyramid and through working very closely with the IOC Olympic Solidarity Department we are making leaps and bounds in giving both our existing Member National Authorities and emerging nations the tools by which they can train those new to sailing. If our sport is to survive in a competitive market place, we need to be innovative and by developing new programmes like this, we are doing exactly that.”
