Australian Sailing launches landmark Club Participation Programs

Australian Sailing is proud to release its long-awaited Club Participation Programs, giving clubs and class associations a valuable resource on how to deliver sailing programs and keep members engaged with the sport.

This club-focused guide helps clubs support members through their sailing journey by delivering coaching and programs specific to the interests of the member in whichever boat or board they enjoy.

“Australian Sailing is committed to sailing being more visible, accessible, relevant and rewarding for all,” said Australian Sailing CEO Ben Houston on the launch.

“The development of Club Participation Programs is key to facilitating and growing member participation, focusing on retaining and developing sailors, coaches, and volunteers at clubs.”

After a successful pilot program these programs have been developed for continuation of great experiences from a Discover Sailing Centre programs to club member participation.

They are designed with flexibility in mind for clubs to adapt to how people choose to participate in sport and include progressive stages of learning and development for the sailor both on and off the water.

The Programs are delivered at clubs by club and class coaches and have no fees for affiliated clubs and classes.

We encourage clubs to consider these programs as a key to retention of members, welcoming new members and growing sailing and strong clubs.

The benefits to clubs include:

Retention of members
Increased recruitment of volunteers
Growth of club culture
Increase diversity and Inclusion
Attracting new participants
Attracting new members
Cohesion from Discover Sailing to Club Participation Programs
Increase club participation

Club Participation Programs

The Participation Programs include skills in:

· On Water development

· Off water development

· Leadership, and Youth development

· Club Participation

· Personal Growth

· The Sailing Environment

As a first step to learning about the Club Participation Program, here we encourage all club volunteers, coaches, sailors (and their stakeholders) to read the Program Blueprint and Profiles that can be found within the Club Participation Program guide. By doing so, you’ll learn about the programs, who they are for and at what stage of a participant’s journey they apply.

The information within is detailed. We encourage you to deeply consider them and then reach out to your State Club Support Team should you have questions.

Australian Sailing looks forward to supporting your club in setting up its programs, preparing and delivering them in the months ahead.
