Vilamoura, Portugal – Three races were completed today in each fleet at the 2022 ILCA 4 Youth World Championships. Vilamoura provided a nice southeast breeze of 7–13 knots, and with pent-up energy from no racing yesterday, the sailors were very eager to get their races off today. This resulted in multiple general recalls at the starts, a lot of action on the water, and some shake-ups on the leaderboards.
In the boys division, U16 Italian sailor Nicoló Cassitta holds first overall with 38 net points, but he is tied with Greece’s Dionysios Kalpogiannakis headed into the final day of the championship. Max Frank of the Netherlands, a new name on the leaderboard, now sits in third overall just 10 points behind Cassitta and Kalpogiannakis. Frank is only one point ahead of Israel’s Omer Vered Vilenchik.
In the girls division, Italy’s Ginevra Caracciolo is leading the fleet after today’s three races. She has a 10-point lead ahead of U16 Ukranian Alina Shapovalova, who climbed from fifth to second place today. Croatian Petra Marendic holds third overall, 12 points behind Shapovalova.
Three races are scheduled for tomorrow, with the first warning signal at 12:30.
