ILCA U21 World Champs – Day 1

Vilamoura, Portugal – Two races were completed today in all three fleets at the 2022 ILCA U21 World Championships. With a beautiful southeast breeze of 10–13 knots, Vilamoura provided its reliable champagne sailing conditions for the first day of the championships.

Top Aussie sailor for the day was Stefan Elliott-Shircore, with a 4th and 7th putting him in 4th overall.

In the ILCA 7 division, Dutch Willem Wiersema scored two bullets in the yellow fleet to hold first place on the leaderboard. Denmark’s Johan Schubert and France’s Theo Peyre each finished strong with a first and second place in the blue fleet, kicking off the event tied.

In the ILCA 6 fleet, Alessia Palanti of the Czech Republic leads the fleet by seven points after two solid top-three finishes in today’s races. Italy’s Sara Savelli holds second overall after finishing with a fifth and sixth. Team Italy won double gold at the 2022 ILCA 4 Youth World Championships last week and gold at the 2022 ILCA 6 Youth World Championships in Texas, so this is another strong start for the Italians. In the same vein, Ireland’s Eve McMahon sits in third overall after the first day of racing. McMahon won three international titles this summer and is back on the water here chasing one more.

Two races are scheduled for tomorrow, with the first warning signal at 14:00.
