World Championships Day 6 – Aussies Fire Up Bullets

Reigning Olympic ILCA 7 champion Matt Wearn has rocketed up the leaderboard to second after posting a bullet (race win) and a third in today’s racing at the Allianz Sailing World Championships in The Hague, The Netherlands.

It was a fine comeback after he misjudged the start.

“We had the tide going against the breeze, so it made it a bit tricky to judge where you were on the line and I just got it wrong and got spat out,” said Wearn.

“It turned out to be the right way though, and it’s nice when good fortune falls your way. I had good boat speed and was able to chip back and be in the top five around the top mark. I finished with a good last downwind to go from second or third to finish first. It was a good little comeback.”

Victorian Casey Imeneo also won a race in the ILCA 6, and just like Wearn she has jumped up the rankings and finds herself in third.

Alison Weatherly won Australia’s first medal at the event, winning Bronze in the Women’s Hansa 303 on the final day of the Para Sailing World Championships. It will sit alongside the Bronze she won last year and her Silver from 2019.

“This reinforces that I can do this, that I am doing the right thing and I do have the ability,” said Weatherly.

The Ballarat sailor is not done yet though, not by a longshot.

“Ballarat Yacht Club has some talented sailors and in the clubhouse they have an honour board for winners of State and National Championships. So far nobody has won a Worlds, so I want to be the first Ballarat sailor to win a World Championship. I want to train, get more people sailing and promote how inclusive sailing really is.”

Olivia Price and Evie Haseldine have qualified for the 49erFX Medal Race in third place. They will enjoy a well-earned day off tomorrow before the double-points race on Friday.

Australia’s 49er and Mixed 470 classes finished their regattas today, with Tom Burton and Max Paul (21st in 49er) and Nia Jerwood and Conor Nicholas (36th in Mixed 470) the best placed teams in their respective squads.

“Today sums up our week. We had a really bad day yesterday and today was much better which continues our yo-yo status,” said Burton. “We’re looking forward to the next couple of regattas to keep the upward trend.”

Australia had four teams in the Nacra 17 Gold fleet, but unfortunately no qualifiers for the Medal Race.

“Overall not a terrible result finishing 25th, but definitely not what we were looking for this week,” said Nacra Skipper Jake Liddell. “It has been a cool experience to be here with the whole team at the combined Worlds though, there have been some really great team vibes.”

There will be a live broadcast of tomorrow’s Mixed 470 and Nacra 17 Medal Races on World Sailing’s YouTube Channel and the Olympic Channel.
