Currently in build, ready to be launched at the next International Multihull Show at La Grande Motte in 20121, Multihull Central's director Brent Vaughan takes us on a digital look around the latest design. Outremer (Oo-TRE-mer) is French for 'over water'.
According to Vaughan, Outremer have just raised the bar again with an incredible package of performance meets luxury with the release of the new 55ft model. Easy to handle, short-handed or alone, she offers spacious living spaces, light and ventilation that are all setting new standards.
Possibly the best addition is a very clever concept borrowed from monohull yachts, the Outremer 55 features twin helms but they can be switched from on deck in a new double helm seat with full outdoor visibility for fun sailing, or switched down into the cockpit for fully protected sailing in bad conditions. A change from the past Outremer's that had outside steering only.
With more room to utilise, the new Outremer 55 features an island bench counter providing more storage in the galley, plus a cocktail bar and all round visibility plus allowing the cockpit doors to slide very wide and open up the boat.
The Outremer’s design team from VPLP have used CFD (Computational Fluid Dynamics) to reduce drag ad forward resistance, while allowing for higher carrying capacity hen blue water cruising. At just 13.5t and combined sail area of 172 sm (Mainsail & Genoa) sailing in light winds will be a joy, but if needed the twin 60hp diesel motors are ready to engage.
