The 47th RL24 National Championship will be held at Illawarra Yacht Club in Warrawong, NSW from 5-9 January 2020, when excellence at the top end of the fleet, boat development, crew work and family fun on and off the water all come into play.
It is an opportunity for all participants to improve through regular competition over 10 races, ask questions about boat set up and adjustments, crew work and tactics. Things learnt at Nationals’ also aid in safer cruising, so even if you’re not a racer come along and extend your skills.
A new series and trophy will be introduced at the Nationals for 2020, in honour of the Late Rob Legg and named the Rob Legg Invitational Series, and will precede the Nationals each year.
The association invites all RL24 members to participate in this short series as an introduction for people who would like to sample the fun of class racing, but just can’t get the time off for a full week of sailing fun. The Invitation Races are three short course races (each lasting about 30-40 minutes) that will take place on Sunday 5 January.
Illawarra Yacht Club is an excellent venue for sailing, camping and socialising, and the club provides great hospitality and racing. So organise your crew, boat and camping gear.
Last year’s sail-past for Rob Legg’s 90th birthday was magnificent with Rob commenting it was one of the special days in his (adventurous and productive) life. Rob passed suddenly on 12 February this year, only a month after his birthday celebrations and we will miss his natural enthusiasm.
The RL24 Owners Association of Australia is hoping to continue the enthusiasm around the class at the moment. Not only is it holding the 47th National Championship, but has also re-established state championships in Victoria, NSW and most recently in Qld.
With members now from as far away as Western Australia, there is a steady stream of boats being refurbished around the country, and our RL24 Facebook page enables people to share their journey, and Rob Legg Yachts page provides the rich RL history and among other services, solves technical questions.
