SailGP Dubai’s racing goes under the data microscope

By Miranda Blazeby @ SailGP

The teams which topped Dubai’s data metrics across fleet racing, including top speeds, best starts and highest fly time, have been revealed.

Data provided by Dubai’s 11-strong F50 fleet shows that Diego Botin’s Spain picked up the highest average speed across the five fleet races – 26.5 km/h, while newcomer Red Bull Italy recorded the lowest – 21.5 km/h.

The same two teams were top and bottom for top recorded speeds too; the Spanish picked up the highest fleet racing speed – 64.8 km/h, while the Italians recorded the lowest – 51.3 km/h.

Botin’s crew was also able to sail the shortest distance throughout fleet racing – a total of 23.37km, while Giles Scott’s Canada sailed the furthest – 28.16km.

Despite this, Canada had the highest average Mark 1 position – an average position of 3.2, while Mubadala Brazil had the lowest, rounding the mark in an average 9th place.

Despite its promising Mark 1 ranking, Canada lost an average of 2.8 places from Mark 1 to the finish line, resulting in an average finishing position of 6. The Kiwis meanwhile were able to transform their lackluster 6.2 Mark 1 position into the highest finish position of the fleet – 3.2, with the team performing the most amount of overtakes of the fleet – a total of 17 throughout the five fleet races.

When it came to foiling stats, Spain had the highest ride height – an average of 44.4cm, while Red Bull Italy had the lowest – 25.7cm.

The Italians also came bottom for fly time percentage – foiling for just 25% of fleet racing, while the Kiwis topped this metric with a 41.4% fly time, despite racing with new flight controller Leo Takahashi for the first time.

While Red Bull Italy came bottom of many metrics, the team managed to skillfully minimize maneuvers, performing just 22 throughout the five fleet races, compared to the United States, which performed the most of the fleet – a total of 36.
