SailGP Racing on the Edge – Episode 2

by Miranda Blazeby – SailGP Media

SailGP fans can now go behind-the-scenes of the league’s off season transfer period, which saw Australia lose veteran wing trimmer Kyle Langford to incoming team Red Bull Italy.

The transfer sent shockwaves through the league, and saw Langford replaced by former British wing trimmer Chris Draper.

The new episode of SailGP’s behind the scenes docuseries Racing on the Edge studies the fallout of this shake up and how both teams faired at the 2025 Season opener in Dubai.

Dubai was a tricky event for both teams, with the Italians finishing last in the fleet and Australia just missing out on a place in the Final to finish in 5th overall.

But in Auckland, it was a different story, with both teams rising to meet the challenge of the heavy winds and choppy sea state. Despite the injury of flight controller Andrea Tesei, which meant he was unable to race, the Italians had a hugely improved performance and raced with France flight controller Jason Saunders in Tesei’s place.

Australia bounced back from Dubai too, dominating fleet racing all weekend and winning the three-boat Final.

Looking back at the action-packed weekend, Langford said it was ‘probably the most anxious I’ve ever been sailing in my life.”

Racing on the Edge features behind-the scenes-insight and up-close interviews with the Championship’s biggest personalities, including New Zealand’s Blair Tuke and Peter Burling, Australian driver Tom Slingsby and driver of the United States Taylor Canfield.

Every episode of Racing on the Edge is available on SailGP’s YouTube channel.
