The Countdown is on for the 2025 Gladstone Ports Corporation Brisbane to Gladstone Yacht Race.
The stage is set for one of Australia’s premier offshore sailing events as the 77th Gladstone Ports Corporation Brisbane to Gladstone Yacht Race (B2G) prepares to set sail on Good Friday, 18 April 2025.
Hosted by the Queensland Cruising Yacht Club (QCYC), the race continues its rich legacy as a key event on the national sailing calendar, attracting Queensland’s finest sailors along with top competitors from across the country.
A true test of skill, strategy, and endurance, the 308 nautical mile race from Moreton Bay to Gladstone
Harbour has been a highlight of Queensland’s sailing community since its inaugural race in 1949. Over the decades, it has grown into one of the nation’s most iconic ocean races, receiving international recognition while remaining a proud Queensland tradition.
Building towards the 80th Anniversary
With the 80th anniversary just a few years away, the 2025 race represents an opportunity for competitors to refine their skills ahead of this significant milestone. The countdown to 2028 has begun, and this year’s race is another step towards an event that will celebrate eight decades of offshore racing excellence.
A storied history steeped in tradition
The Brisbane to Gladstone Yacht Race began with humble origins, featuring just seven vessels in its
inaugural run. Over the decades, it has grown into a premier bluewater classic, with yachts competing for
the prestigious Courier Mail Cup – one of Australia’s oldest perpetual trophies. The race has weathered
challenges, including cyclones and the recent global pandemic, yet it continues to thrive, symbolising
resilience and passion within the sailing community.
Queensland Cruising Yacht Club Commodore David Hamilton reflected on the race’s long tradition and its
place in the Australian sailing community.
“The Gladstone Ports Corporation Brisbane to Gladstone Yacht Race is a true showcase of skill,
determination and the rich maritime heritage of Queensland,” said Mr Hamilton. “Reaching its 77th year is a testament to the enduring appeal of this iconic event, and we look forward to another year of fierce
competition and unforgettable moments on the water.”
This year also marks a special milestone as QCYC celebrates 60 years of multihull racing, in partnership
with the Multihull Yacht Club Queensland.
“We are proud to share this race with the multihull community and celebrate their 60 year contribution to
offshore sailing,” Mr Hamilton said. “For only the second time, multihulls will start alongside monohulls in a joint event, making this a fitting tribute to their history and role in the sport.”
Mr Hamilton also extended his gratitude to the event’s sponsors, whose support makes the race possible
each year.“We could not deliver this event without the generous support of our sponsors and partners,” he said. “A huge thank you to Gladstone Ports Corporation, Gladstone Regional Council, Brisbane City Council via Brisbane Economic Development Agency, and all those who help bring this race to life. Their commitment ensures we can continue to grow this great Queensland tradition and share it with more people each year.”
