Britain’s Dobson and Tidy win 49erFX Championship in Cascais

After leading the 49erFX Championship in Cascais since day one and following a protracted battle with the top ranked Spanish crew, Charlotte Dobson and Saskia Tidey from GBR have gone on to win the event from their rivals, Tamara Echegoyen/Paula Barcelo by 13 points.

Dobson/Tidey started the day badly with their worst result of the series, a 16th place, but came back with blistering 2-1-2, winning the double points Medal Race, to take the Championship. The Spaniards, having kept the British team on their toes throughout, had a disappointingly lacklustre final day, scoring 9- 9- 4- 6.

The Norwegian pair of Helene Naess/Marie Ronningen finished third, knocking Martine Grael/Kahena Kunze (BRA) out of an almost guaranteed podium finish, when the latter suffered difficulties, including being unable to compete in the Medal Race.

Australia’s Tess Lloyd/Jaime Ryan started the event slowly but got better as the event wore on and scraped into the top ten for the Medal Race and finished 10th.

Cascais said goodbye to the Olympic 49erFX fleet in style. With three fleet races and the Medal Race completed today, the Olympic sailors were able to sail in different conditions in a single day, giving them great practice for the upcoming Olympics. The first race, which was completed on the Guia Race area, was sailed in stronger 18 knot winds with waves of approximately one and a half metres.

The second and third races of the day, held in Cascais Bay, produced more moderate winds around 15 knots and with some shifts. It was also within Cascais Bay that the ten best competed in the Medal Race.

In total, five continents were represented – North America, South America, Europe, Asia and Oceania – for a total of 19 nationalities .

The 12-race plus Medal Race for the top 10 Championship took place in Cascais from the 7-12 June. This was the last event before summer Olympic Games in Tokyo in July.
