Call goes out to save historic vessel

The leaseholders of Middle Percy Island south-east of Mackay in Queensland are calling for expressions of interest from cruisers who might be able to help restore an important part of the island's heritage.

“We believe that there may be an opportunity to recover the historic sailing vessel “Islander,” which was constructed by Claude and Harold White on Middle Percy Island in the 1930s,” Cate and John of Middle Percy said.

“She is currently sitting on the hardstand at the Palm Street Boat Yard in Mackay in very poor condition.

“We are calling for people who may be interested in restoring her if and when we are able to recover her. Time is of the essence as the window of opportunity to recover her may be narrow.

“If you believe that you might be interested in buying her to restore her then please contact us at Middle Percy Island on 07 4951 0993. We will require a firm expression of interest before progressing this matter.

“A grant towards her restoration may be available for a non-profit organisation from the Queensland Maritime Museum. We do not have the time or financial resources to restore her ourselves.”
