Day 1 at La Grande Motte

The British teams set the pace on the opening day of the 49er European Championship, grabbing the lead in both fleets of the qualifying draw. With the competition heating up in La Grande Motte, South of France, 148 international teams faced challenges on the Mediterranean Sea.

49er Men: Peters and Sterritt Shine

James Peters and Fynn Sterritt, Britain’s Olympic hopefuls for Paris 2024, made a remarkable start after a disappointing stint at the World Championships. Securing victories in races one and three, they are claiming the top spot in the yellow group of qualifying.

Meanwhile, newly teamed James Grummett and Rhos Hawes mirrored their compatriots’ success, clinching wins in their first and last races and securing a ninth place in the second race.

49erFX: Italy Surges Ahead

In the 49erFX fleet, Italy’s Jana Germani and Giorgia Bertuzzi stormed to the front, seizing the early lead with three impressive fifth-place finishes. Despite challenging conditions, they showcased their prowess, setting the bar high for the competition.

Nacra 17: Drama and Triumph

Paul Kohlhoff and Alica Stuhlemmer of Germany started strong, winning the first race but faced setbacks with a capsizing incident in the second race. Despite challenges, Italy’s Ruggero Tita and Caterina Banti surged ahead with two consecutive victories
