For those in the south anticipating a cold, wet winter, perhaps a trip to Port Douglas for the Mickey Ink Port Douglas Race Week would be the solution.
Held in the beautiful tourist town north of Cairns every year, with the famous Clipper Cup trophy up for grabs, the race week is a great mix of racing and social events. Passage races around the islands alternate with windward/leewards in the trade winds off the main beach. At night you can attend the carnival in town or enjoy a drink at the yacht club bar.
This year's event will be held from April 27 to May 2 which includes the Labour day long weekend.
Visiting boats will be safe in the new marina and some crew positions may be available for those who want to fly in and enjoy the northern hospitality.
Division 1 – Spinnakers
Division 2 – Non Spinnaker
Division 3 – Multi Hulls
Division 4 – Sports boats under 9m, including J24s.
The event has already attraced 11 entries, including five who have not competed before, so organisers anticipate a good turn-out. For more information and to enter online, go to www.portdouglasraceweek.com.au.
