Etihad Stadium loses mast on way to Rolex Sydney Hobart start

Grant Wharington's 98ft Super Maxi, Etihad Stadium (formerly Skandia Wild Thing) has been dismasted on her delivery journey from Melbourne to Sydney for the start of the Rolex Sydney Hobart on Boxing Day.

The dismasting occurred off Gabo Island, on the Victoria/NSW border and the boat is now heading for Eden under motor. No-one was hurt in the incident.

Although masts for these massive maxis are not “stock items” in any rigging yard, it is thought that the spare rig from Neville Chrichton's Alfa Romeo may be available to be flown from France in time for the race start.
