Fun in the sun building some miles

Cold southern weather getting you down. Fancy heading north for the sun? Or just an offshore trip with instruction to brush-up on your skills?

Sydney sail-training school EastSail is running its annual series of milebuilding trips from the end of July to mid-September and still has some vacancies.

Sailors who want to brush up on their sailing skills or join in the fun of Hamilton Island Race Week can sign up for one of several different legs from Sydney to the Whitsundays and return.

The trip will run from the end of July to mid-September and will be split into three legs north to Hamilton Island, Hamilton Island Race Week and then three legs south back to Sydney. Crew will either be able to join the yacht to gain an RYA qualification, build miles and gain experience or just to enjoy the unique race experience that is Hamilton Island Race Week.

EastSail's Alex Prowse said a Beneteau 40.7 yacht would be used.

“This is in full commercial survey and meets all the safety requirements for offshore cruising and RYA sail training,” she said.

Well-known Fastnet and round-the-world Clipper race stalwart Martin Silk will be the master aboard for the passage legs north and south and several-time Olympic sailing coach Dayne Sharp will be the master for Hamilton Island Race Week.

Crew must have some sailing experience on yachts equivalent to the RYA Start Yachting course.

Students on the mile-building legs who wish to do so can also work through the syllabus of a RYA course in accordance with their sailing experience, ranging from RYA Competent Crew to Coastal Skipper (some of the more advanced courses require pre-requisite theory courses).
