Hobie Nationals to take full advantage of the Fremantle Doctor

The Australian Hobie Class National Championships 2009/2010 in Mandurah promises to be spectacular and exhilarating.

The sponsors, The Hog's Breath Cafe and Hobie Cat Australasia are proud to announce two series held from 29 December 2009 to 5 January 2010. The regatta is managed by the Mandurah Offshore Fishing and Sailing Club with help from the Hobie Cat Association Western Australia.

The first series is a field of 20 boats competing for national titles in masters, women, youth and Hobie Tiger fleets. Races will be held from 29 to 31 December 2009. There will be a brief New Year's break to enjoy the festivities in Mandurah before the second series resumes.

The second series will see around 45 teams competing for the Hobie 16 Open championship from 2 to 5 January 2010. Open teams can be any combination of age and gender.

The combined races are attracting international and interstate competitors including teams from Germany, Singapore and Fiji. Among the many sailing athletes, there will be the largest gathering of past and current World and Australian National Hobie Cat champions.

Current 2008 Australian National Champions Taylor Booth and Emma Sturgeon will be defending their title against celebrity sailors with recent top three finishes

Kerli Corlett (NSW) – 2007 and 2002 Grand Masters Champion
Cam Owen (WA) – 2007 3rd at World Championships
Darren Smith (WA) – 1990 to 2008 numerous National Titles
Gavin Colby (WA) – 2001 to 2004 World Champion

Part of the race course will be visible from the shoreline and two spectator boats will be on the water. Individuals and media interested in watching the races from the water should contact the Mandurah Offshore Fishing and Sailing Club or the Hobie Cat Association Western Australia for more information.

ABOUT Hobie Catamarans
The Hobie 16 is a 16 foot / 4.9 m catamaran with two sailors and has been a popular racing catamaran for 40 years. The Hobie Tiger is an 18 foot / 5.5 m catamaran with two sailors and a newer design. The 3rd sail on a Hobie Tiger is used down-wind.

The Hobie Cat was born in a surfboard shop in Southern California in 1969 and is named after it's developer Hobie Alter. Numerous Hobie catamarans have been designed over the years with the most popular racing boats ranging from 14 feet to 20 feet in length.
