Viana do Castelo, Portugal – The 2024 ILCA Under 21 World Championship kicked off in Viana do Castelo, running from July 1st to 8th. Today marks the first day of racing, and the sailing conditions continue to surpass expectations in what will become an exhilarating week for the sailors. We proudly report that the sailors represent 49 countries rather than just 41 to correct the information from yesterday’s press release.
The day began at 11:45 with the D Flags up for the yellow ILCA 7 and ILCA 6 fleets. The wind conditions had a strong breeze clocking from 330º, starting at 12 knots, which was building up to 18 knots by the second race. All fleets successfully completed two races today.
The first race day provided excellent sailing conditions and showcased the warm hospitality of Viana do Castelo. The sailors look forward to continuing the qualifying races in this picturesque coastal city.
We have a stong group of Australian sailors in teis World Championships, with 9 in the ILCA7 and 4 in the ILCA6 fleet. Good luck to them all.
