The six teams vying for the podium position in the 2009 Interdominion Secondary Schools Team Racing Championship are currently racing on the waters of Waterloo Bay east of Brisbane city in the suburb of Manly. The top three Australian Teams and top three New Zealand Teams will fight it out in team racing style over the next three days aiming to finish as the champion nation. The teams are racing in the Royal Queensland Yacht Squadron owned Pacer dinghies and the regatta is proudly sponsored by Westpac Business Banking.
The Australian Team is represented by The Hutchins School (TAS), Anglican Church Grammar School (QLD) and St Joseph's School (SA). The Hutchins School won the Australian School Team Racing Championship in June 2009 over a four day regatta.
The New Zealand contingent have taken a few days to acclimatise to the warm Queensland weather and are represented by the Mahurangi Team, Saint Kentigern College and Tauranga Boys College.
Yachting Australia CEO Phil Jones said that Interdominion Team Racing has become a highlight of the regions sailing calendar.
“Every year the level of competition rises,” said Jones. “The rivalry between Australia and New Zealand is always fierce and it won't be any different during this regatta.”
