Laser World Masters delayed by appalling weather

Neither rain, nor gale, nor lack of power will stop the 300 athletes from around the world competing at the 2009 Nautel Laser Masters Worlds. Opening ceremonies were postponed last night because of heavy rain and are rescehduled as Welcoming Ceremonies for Tuesday evening.

Then higher than forecast wind gusts overnight knocked out power to the St. Margaret Sailing Club when an event tent blew down and wrapped around a power line. Undaunted, organizers set up an emergency generator early this morning to provide enough power to get the fleets organized and sailors on the water.

Under clear skies the radial fleets are sailing off Crouchers' Point and the Standard fleets are being towed to Queensland to start racing. Winds are about 10 knots and dropping.
