In a matter of minutes, Rob McVey lost his home Proud Mary when she crashed into the rock wall off the Whitsunday Sailing Club on Thursday afternoon.
Photos, food and possessions danced up and down on the water, but were out of reach and already lost.
Mr McVey scaled the rocks of the Whitsunday Sailing Club back to shore, arm in arm with Joe Pearce, Dave Zimmerman and Kevin Clifton who came to his aid.
His legs were bloodied, but he was glad to be alive.
“I was on board. I was sitting there and regularly watching the (boat) pitch a bit. She was fetching, but I got a heap of chain out and I thought I might just throw a cap berry on – which is another weight on the chain, to hold the chain down. And I went forward and I thought if this freshens any more I'll drop another cap berry,” Mr McVey said.
“The next thing I know I'm going sideways (and) just threw the anchor up.”
