Team New Zealand appears to have confirmed that Peter Burling will skipper their defence of the America's Cup in 2021. During a recent Facebook question and Answer session, Ray Davies was asked the direct question and said, “We have (signed him). He is going to be skipper. We're looking forward to rebuilding from what we had in Bermuda and obviously we've got to take it to another level again, and we're very excited about the sailing team we have.”
Ashby is likely to be a key man both in the design and sailing teams.
Davies said Team New Zealand have signed more than half of their crew from their successful 2017 America's Cup campaign for 2021.
“It's a long way away until we're sailing these boats, and we're not in a position to hire a full sailing squad at this stage. We've got a few key guys that are helping with the design and then well build on that as it comes closer to the time.”
Burling is sailing currently for Team Brunel in the Volvo Ocean Race.
