Its almost 30 years since Port Douglas Yacht Club conducted its first annual race regatta. This year’s 2024 Riddoch Insurance Port Douglas Race Week preparations are well and truly underway, with our dedicated race committee organising a great week of sailing from May 13th to 18th 2024.
Entries are open and our fleet is already starting to form, with boats from Cairns and Townsville preparing to venture north, to meet our local sailors at the Port Douglas Yacht Club.
This regatta caters for all boats within four divisions, over four race days. Amongst our early entries are Peter Chapman with Allora (Bavaria 42) and Doug Ryan with Shazam (Beneteau 44.7) who are both long-time sailors and supporters of this regatta, racing as our own Port Douglas representatives in division one.
Our first Townsville representative, Joe Niven with Daylight (Beneteau Oceanis 34) is our first new entry to the 2024 regatta, racing in Division 2, and returning Townsville skipper James Permezel with Charm Offensive (Hanse 445) set to try for another Division 1 win.
At the helm of the Race Management Team will be the highly regarded Greg Sinclair.
Greg is a National Race Officer and has both National and International experience in running keelboat regattas. He has been involved in some of Australia’s leading yachting events including Festival of Sails, Hamilton Island Race Week and Sail Port Stephens, as well as regattas in Townsville, Thailand and Hong Kong.
We are very excited to welcome Greg with his extensive knowledge of all things sailing, back to the forefront of this year’s regatta.
We are proud to announce that our naming rights sponsor this year is again Riddoch Insurance Services. This firm has had a long relationship with PDYC. It is with the unwavering support of Riddoch Insurance, our committee were able to begin plans for this year’s regatta.
Port Douglas Race Week is also being sponsored by the Good Sports programme. The Good Sports programme supports and inspires community sporting clubs to better cater to the needs of their participants and volunteers.
We also thank Sport Leisure P/L for their apparel sponsorship. Their supply of Race Week polos will see our crews looking even better out on the water and will add to their collection of race week merchandise.
