A new service has been launched that offers massive benefit for all boat owners and private berth and mooring owners around Australia.
Rent My Boat Berth provides a simple web-based system for people cruising the coast to book a berth or mooring in advance from a private home owner or a marina.
Rent My Boat Berth is an initiative of renowned marine industry identities Andy and Belinda Young, owners of Australia's largest luxury boat shared ownership business Boating Syndication Australia. Two years ago Andy also launched new luxury boat brand Longreef Yachts.
“The owners of all those moorings and berths in all those bays can now unlock additional income,” said Belinda Young. “Boat owners can also have peace of mind knowing they have legally booked the berth or mooring and can’t be kicked off!
“There are thousands of properties along our harbours and waterways with empty pontoon berths or moorings,” said Ms Young. “The owners may be away or may have bought the property with no intention of ever putting a boat on the pontoon. Now there is a chance to monetise that empty pontoon or mooring and offer a benefit to cruising boaters.”
She said the initiative fits perfectly in the 21st century shared economy, unlocking resources for the boating community.
Marinas with short-term empty berths can also benefit by offering those berths at favourable rates to help maintain cash flow.
Boaters are often frustrated by finding that a marina has no berth available while there are empty private berths nearby. Rent My Boat Berth solves the problem, allowing the boaters often to find exciting new locations that might previously have been inaccessible – private berths, pontoons and moorings in secluded bays or in yacht clubs for example.
Ms Young said that berth owners can register online and price their offering at any level they desire. Boaters can look up all available berths online and book either well in advance or at short notice.
Berth and boat owners pay nothing to register online. Rent My Boat Berth simply charges a small booking fee.
“It unlocks additional revenue for berth and mooring owners and saves mega dollars for boat owners who are looking for berths and moorings,” said Ms Young. “It also allows boat owners to compare rates at different marinas and berths. The most economic rate equals occupied berths and moorings.”
Boaters select the berth they want and pay online by credit card. The amount is held by Rent My Boat Berth until one week after the rental is satisfactorily completed when the fee is sent to the berth owner.
“This covers the boater who may find a berth is not what was advertised,” said Ms Young. “In that case, we are able to refund the full cost to the boater.”
She said Rent My Boat Berth offers a new source of income for berth owners and convenient low-cost overnight or longer-term mooring for cruising boaters.
