October 22, 2018 – English producer Rob Dickinson (Orillo Films) is the overall winner of the Mirabaud Sailing Video Award 2018. Dickinson submitted a film recounting team AkzoNobel's journey in the Volvo Ocean Race 17-18. A very dynamic and entertaining one-minute clip that combines sailing, emotions and human spirits.
For its second edition, the competition brought together 28 videos, which were viewed online more than 350,000 times. Rob Dickinson and the other participants will be celebrated tomorrow, Tuesday 23 October, by the international yacht racing community gathered at the Yacht Racing Forum in Lorient. “Beautifully crafted in the edit, nice work. Great use of music and audio – punchy”, summarized Shirley Robertson, a two-time Olympic champion and CNN Mainsail anchor.
“Excellent and very professional, wow-factor edit. By the nature of the subject matter, it’s hugely ambitious in scope and perhaps lacking context/narrative as a result – therefore a great summary video but audience needs to know the subject matter well already to fully appreciate”, completed Georgie Corlett-Pitt, editor-in-chief of Yachts & Yachting magazine.
Second in the ranking, Australian director Beau Outteridge dared to submit a funny and offbeat video shot behind the scenes of the Australian Olympic sailing team. “Beau found an angle that had not been done before and the athletes were on-board and happy to show their humorous side – something that can quite often be a challenge in a world full of media trainers!”, commented Daniel Smith, World Sailing Communication & Digital Manager.
The Volvo Ocean Race was widely represented in this competition, as illustrated by the video shot by Ugo Fonollá, who took third place. On-board Reporter during the regatta, he submitted a powerful video that describes team MAPFRE’s approach to Cape Horn.
The six members of the Jury (see list below) also awarded the best video produced by a sailor. Frenchman Stan Thuret wins this award thanks to a video clip about his participation in the Mini Transat.
“The second edition of the Mirabaud Sailing Video Award brought together the most beautiful videos produced in 2018,” explains Nicolas Mirabaud, member of the international jury and member of the Executive Committee of Mirabaud & Cie SA. “The competition, initiated last year, is still in the development phase, but we are delighted to see directors from all over the world submitting specific videos for the competition. We are delighted to see the project develop, as did the Mirabaud Yacht Racing Image competition for the most beautiful sailing photos.”
The “Public Award”, which allows the general public to vote for their favourite video and reach a wide international audience, crowned the video produced by Erwan Pelisset (EP Medias), author of a video about sailor Jacques Valente, who got a kidney transplant ten years ago following his participation in the Mini Transat, and who will compete next month in the Route du Rhum promoting organ donation.
