Three Peaks competitors warned to get their preparation right

Australia's Three Peaks Race, a unique three-day sailing and running endurance event conducted around Tasmania's scenic east coast, will start in Devonport on Friday, March 6th 2015. Potential competitors are being advised by the Mersey Yacht Club organising committee to take seriously the amount of preparation required.

“For runners this event is the equivalent of three marathons in three days,” said committee chairman Terry Travers. “And for sailors competing short-handed with non-sailors aboard, serious preparation for fatigue management and man-overboard scenarios is required.”

As the event travels between four ports, there are a large number of volunteers needed, associated logistics have to be repeated in each location, and race officers are required to travel between locations – a huge organisational effort. Competitors need to make their intention known by the new deadline so that sufficient resources can be deployed around the state.

Race rules have been amended to ensure teams lodge their expressions of interest forms by December 6th. The Expression of Interest is now a pre-requisite to obtaining an entry into the event. Expressions of interest, and consequently a race entry, will not be available after this date. Following lodgement of an expression of interest, completed entries can be finalised up until February 8th.

Changes to crews can be made after December 6th provided details of the individuals' preparations are lodged with the committee and accepted as being sufficient for the rigours of the event.

Late entries will not be accepted.

“This is a challenging race for both runners and sailors and should not be taken lightly. Preparation is vital. For these reasons our committee has taken the decision to enforce an earlier deadline than in previous years,” said Travers, a 12 time competitor and former winner.

“There is nothing like this race elsewhere in Australia. The scenery, the tough weather conditions, the team spirit forged between disparate disciplines has to be experienced to be appreciated”, he said. “Prepare now and be part of this tradition.”

Expression of interest forms and details of the event can be found on the website.
