Australian Sailing have reported on a solid Day 1 at Trofeo Princesa Sofía Mallorca by Fergus Hotels
The opening day of racing at the Sailing Grand Slam was a game of two halves. The morning fleets enjoyed fantastic breeze and delivered some standout performances, while the afternoon fleets battled shifty conditions, abandoned races, but still managed to thrive.
iQFOiL: Grae Morris made a statement on day one, taking two race wins from three and leading the fleet!
ILCA 7: Ethan McAullay was the king of consistency, finishing second in their two races to sit 2nd overall. Zac Littlewood also bounced back strong with a race win in his second qualifying race and is in the hunt 16th overall.
ILCA 6: Zoe Thomson secured a 3rd place finish in her second race and holds 6th overall, while Mara Stransky is just outside the top 10 in 11th, and Casey Imeneo following close behind in 13th.
49erFX: Laura Harding & Annie Wilmot had a solid day on the water, finishing the day in 7th overall.
49er: The new pairing of Otto Henry & Olympian Shaun Connor seized a race win, proving their potential. However, tricky conditions and race abandonments meant they couldn’t complete all three races. They sit in 8th overall.
Nacra 17: Three Aussie crews are inside the top 10, with Brin Liddell & Rhiannan Brown leading the charge in 6th (unfortunately the pair were set to win the first race of the day until they discovered they were over the start line early and disqualified with a UFD). Jake Liddell and new crew Niamh Meehan are in 8th whilst Ruben & Rita Booth are in 10th.
Promising first day for the Aussies, plenty more racing to come – stay tuned!
