Yacht hitting reef at Beachport sparks Maritime Safety Authority reminder

The Australian Maritime Safety Authority (AMSA) is reminding sailors to ensure they are well equipped for long journeys, after a yacht accident at Beachport yesterday morning.

A 12-metre yacht ran into trouble on its way from Adelaide to Portland, in south-west Victoria, when it hit a large reef about 1:30am (ACST).

Four men were forced to escape onto a lifeboat when the yacht started to take water.

AMSA spokeswoman Andrea Hayward-Maher said the men's quick use of a distress beacon may have saved their lives.
