Young sailor completes solo Pacific crossing to raise money for Indigenous Literacy

Wednesday July 11, 2018: 27-year-old Dr. Andrew Brazier has arrived in Los Angeles, after an ambitious 15,000 km solo sailing voyage, undertaken to raise funds for the Indigenous Literacy Foundation. Leaving Sydney on 24 March, he arrived in America after 85 days on the Pacific Ocean, coinciding with NAIDOC celebrations.

Surrounded by books from a young age, Andrew has always had a passion for literacy. After spending time in the Northern Territory, he was inspired to undertake the solo journey to raise awareness and funds for the essential work being done by the Indigenous Literacy Foundation.

An incredible feat, Andrew battled with a dislocated shoulder and several harsh ocean storms on his solo expedition. Despite this, Brazier embraced every minute of the lone voyage, and is thrilled to have completed the journey for the ILF, “There are many thanks involved in such a journey. But, in particular, thanks to the Indigenous Literacy Foundation. Your work is heroic. Many months ago, I had a vague notion that I was going to conquer an ocean. It has been a privilege to use this to raise awareness and funds for your life-changing work”.

Andrew arrivesAt the time of writing Dr Brazier has raised over $16,500, funds that will continue to support the ongoing work of the Indigenous Literacy Foundation. A not-for-profit charity, the ILF delivers essential resources to over 250 remote and Indigenous communities in Australia.

ILF Executive Director Karen Williams said. “Our enormous thanks go to Andrew for his courage and endurance. We don’t get many fundraisers who undertake such heroic deeds and we’re extremely relieved that he has arrived safely”.
